The Importance of Community - A Business Lesson

I read this amazing article in the Harvard Business Review online today - written by none other than Starbucks CEO, Howard Schultz. It's called 'Invest in Communities to Advance Capitalism'.

The gist of it is to realize that philanthropy no longer cuts it - you have to get your hands dirty and build a community - only then will success follow. Here's my favorite paragraph from the article:

When looked at through the capitalistic lens, innovating the very nature of corporate-community relations is good business. Companies that hold on to the old-school, singular view of limiting their responsibilities to making a profit will not only discover it is a shallow goal but an unsustainable one. Values increasingly drive consumer and employee loyalties. Money and talent will follow those companies whose values are compatible with their own.

Last month was a super exciting month for me - and no, not just because I was living the good life in Toronto.

I was published! In print!

Now, this is exciting because although I know online media is the new paradigm - there's just something about holding paper in your hands that makes it so much real (that, and the fact that I've been published online a couple times already).

New goal for 2011: Get published in print at least 2 more times.

The Art of...

A few months ago, I attended an online workshop The Future of Marketing. It brought together the best and brightest minds in marketing to discuss where the future is going.

Today I had the opportunity to actually attend a similar type of event - called The Art of Marketing in Toronto. It brought together 5 key minds in marketing: Avinash Kaushik, Gary Vaynerchuk, Jeffrey Hayzlett, Sheena Iyengar and Guy Kawasaki.

My take on the event?

It started out inspiring with a talk by Web Analytics author and Google Employee, Avinash Kaushik. The morning passed quickly although there was no break (sad face), but after lunch is when I really had my sad face on.

As an avid watcher of TED talks, I was excited to see Dr. Sheena Iyengar speak. Imagine my surprise when I get to the exact SAME talk as I watched on TED! Definite fail. I'm just happy I had a lovely lunch from Freshii and had snuck my OJ into the auditorium!

My afternoon quickly took a turn for the best with the last speaker, Guy Kawasaki :) He was engaging, inspiring, funny and overall authentic.

Was the event worth it?

I can't decide. Guy was awesome, as was Avinash, but the rest was mediocre.
